The playful, experimental and fantastical nature of the circus made it a constant source of fascination for the historical Bauhaus. It was feted in the school’s theatrical work and at celebrations. The 2026 Bauhaus Festival picks up on the original Bauhaus members’ enthusiasm for the circus. We welcome you with contemporary circus projects, material performances, interactive games and dance.
Stage programme on the festive area
On both days, a packed stage programme will take place on the festival grounds of the Bauhaus building. Students from the circus academies ESAC (Belgium) and Codarts (Netherlands), as well as SENECA Intensiv Berlin, will be performing the world premiere of Material in Motion. The project focuses on the interplay between body and material from various perspectives. Students from the Palucca University of Dance will present a Bauhaus circus revue, loosely based on the performance that Lou Scheper created for the opening of the Bauhaus building on 4 December 1926, set to music by Gerhart Münch.
Upsala-Circus
In the parking lot, Upsala-Circus from Zeitz combines documentary theatre, experimental opera, contemporary circus and physical performance (world premiere). The focus lies on the biographies of Bauhaus students, told through voice, movement and materials. Sculpture, clay and water form an ever-changing scenography, whilst circus performers work with balance, risk and the limits of the body.
“EXTREM Hoch 4” at the Prellerhaus (world premiere)
As part of this dance-and-visual production, under the artistic direction of the Argentine choreographer Celia Millán, all the balconies of the studio building will be used for the first time. Featuring dancers from the Sorbian National Ensemble Bautzen, set to music by Rodolfo Corbetta (Argentina).
Raxli Faxli: “Archimagie!” (world premiere)
The children’s and youth circus from Dessau-Roßlau tells a special story of magic, a playful alchemist and a lost balance. Everyone uses their strengths to restore the balance and, in doing so, discovers entirely new ways of being together.
Clownish moments with the “Choo Choo Bande”
The clown collective Choo Choo Bande draws inspiration from music, links the various performance areas and guides the audience through the programme. In doing so, they create their own clownish interactions with the audience and the other artists taking part in the Bauhaus Festival.
The main dance area at this year’s Bauhaus Festival is the festive area, where people used to dance to the music of the day right here at the historic Bauhaus. Accordingly, you can also dance to historical dances from the 1920s and their contemporary adaptations here. Time Rag Departement from Berlin will be performing.
