Friday Group: Building Stock + Re-Use

Friday Group: Building Stock + Re-Use

“Every minute, a building is demolished in Europe – not by natural disasters, but by human hands.” This is how the call to action for HouseEurope’s Europe-wide citizens’ initiative “Power to Renovation” began! The initiative is committed to preventing the demolition of buildings and replacing it with renovation.

This Friday group focuses on the themes of building stock and re-use. The starting point is the exhibition Algae | Debris | CO2, which is on display in the former Zeeck department store. It showcases a range of examples from the fields of architecture and design that explore the reuse and repurposing of buildings, building components, waste materials and other materials. What makes this particularly special is that the building and the exhibition themselves serve as practical examples. Whatever can be repaired is repaired, such as the floor. Whatever can be reused is reused. Additions, such as the ceiling lighting system, follow the principles of recyclability or are designed to be recyclable from the outset.

In the Friday Group, we will present the repair of the floor in the former department store by Altro Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG / Hütten & Paläste Berlin. We will explore what incentives are needed to halt the destruction of ecological, economic, social and cultural resources caused by the demolition of buildings and to make renovation the new norm. We discuss how heritage conservation can serve as a model on the path towards a culture of repair, a circular economy and sustainability. And we present the Federal Cultural Foundation’s Fonds Zero, which encourages climate-neutral art and cultural projects and thus raises the issue of reuse in the context of exhibitions as well.
