Out of the Display Case: A promotional film for Dessau

In 1931, Bauhaus artist Roman Clemens offered to produce a promotional film for the city of Dessau for the city’s mayor, Fritz Hesse. The short script for this film, which was ultimately never realised, came into the possession of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation as part of a generous donation by the Frankfurt collector Bernd Freese and is now on display as part of the exhibition Bakelite | Glaze | Colour at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau.

In this discussion, Torsten Blume, of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, provides an insight into the context of city promotion during the Weimar Republic, against which Clemens’s film idea was conceived. Clarissa Seidel, also of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, not only presents the film script and its individual storyboards, but also demonstrates what the final film might have looked like.
