In the 1920s, steel was considered the material of the future. Based on preliminary work in Weimar, painter and Bauhaus master Georg Muche looked for ways to make it usable for mass housing construction. Together with architecture student Richard Paulick, he designed an experimental steel building. The Steel House was presented to the public on the occasion of the opening of the Bauhaus Building in Dessau in December 1926. It was completed in the spring of 1927.
