Presentations at Bauhaus

Three permanent presentations enhance the experience in the historic Bauhaus building: the artist Jun Yang stages iconic Bauhaus seating furniture at various locations in the building, combining original designs with translations and imitations, the presentation “Lernort Bauhaus” shows current learning formats from the Academy and Curatorial Workshop departments of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and an exhibition on the glass façade of the Bauhaus building traces the eventful history of this famous façade.

Bauhaus as place of learning

With „Bauhaus as place of learning“, the former architecture room becomes a place for an exhibition and for visitors to linger. Against the background and context of the historical Bauhaus Dessau as a school (1926-1932), current forms of learning are presented here that are practised today in the two departments of the Academy and the Curatorial Workshop of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. These include research and teaching on history and critical reflection on modern and current design discourses as well as communication and playful, speculative reinterpretations of historical exercises, materials and ideas.

Through a selection of featured projects, visitors are invited to participate in the many-voiced conversations of these teaching programmes, workshops, publications and other formats on the discourse and practice of design.

The glass façade at the Bauhaus

The striking steel and glass façade of the workshop wing was a novelty when it was completed in 1926 and for a long time epitomised modern construction. Since its destruction in 1945 as a result of the war, the building has undergone repeated changes. One of the most important of these was the reconstruction of the façade as an aluminium and glass construction in 1976, during which time people began to appreciate the Bauhaus again. It became (once again) a place for design and architectural issues.

The exhibition traces the eventful history of the famous façade. Historical photographs show the interiors and everyday life of the training centre from the 1920s to the 1980s. Witnesses from different generations have their say in sound and vision.

„Mehr als echt (More than real)“

In his work Mehr als echt (More than real), Jun Yang presents famous Bauhaus furniture of various origins in the historic Bauhaus Building. The Vienna-based artist presents various rooms with a precise selection of furniture produced true to the original, translations and free imitations. He thematises the further developments and changes that the design heritage of the Bauhaus, specifically furniture design, has undergone in recent decades. Jun Yang’s work for the Bauhaus Dessau is about interpretations and transfers: from industrial furniture to design icon, to fetish, to copy and to work of art. With his choice of furniture, Jun Yang rejects a strict concept of authenticity and at the same time invites us to constantly renegotiate ideas of authenticity. What is the authentic that needs to be preserved?

To mark the centenary of the Bauhaus in Dessau, Tecta and Jun Yang are launching an experiment to develop a new, fully recyclable Wassily edition. The name ‘Wassily’ was introduced in the 1960s by Dino Gavina as a marketing name for the Breuer B3 armchair. Tecta produces the foldable armchair under the name D4.
