The series Nitrate | Silver | Light focuses on experimental film art of the 1920s, whose explorations of materiality, memory and artistic authorship continue to resonate today. The focus is on film in its physical dimension: projection and light, the graininess of the material, chemical processes and visible traces of processing.
A film installation will be on display at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau from 22 Oct – 12 Nov 2025. Two accompanying film evenings will explore the theme and the dialogue between historical works and contemporary perspectives in greater depth:
23 Oct 2025
> Kunsthalle Dessau
On 23 Oct 2025, the film Things to come: László, Lucia and Sibyl Moholy-Nagy (Germany 2020, 45 min) by Angela Zumpe will also be presented at the Kunsthalle Dessau at 7 pm. This will be followed by a discussion between Thomas Tode and the filmmaker.
6 Nov 2025
> Bauhaus Museum Dessau
On the evening of 6 Nov 2025, a selection of experimental film art will be shown. For artists of the 1920s, the medium of film itself became the focus of attention in terms of its material properties, such as the projected light, the graininess of the material, the chemical development, or scratches on the film base. The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker and curator Thomas Tode and guests.
