Historical-scientific dialogue:
Torsten Blume, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, and Daniel Hans Rapoport, University of Lübeck
Why were steel and aluminium the preferred metals in the metal workshop of the Dessau Bauhaus? To what extent did teaching and workshop work focus on the origin and properties of these materials? Was it only about art and technology, or was science also a factor? Why were the Bauhaus members so enthusiastic about metal that they celebrated a ‘Metal Festival’ in 1929 and wanted to dance in metal as ‘steel chair people’? These and similar questions are addressed in the historical-scientific dialogue between Torsten Blume and Daniel Hans Rapoport.

Workshop: Bauhaus Dessau Active – Materials Science
Open workshop for children, young people and adults with Anne Schneider, Jutta Stein and Moritz Appich
In this workshop, modern materials can be experienced with all the senses. Participants experiment with form, colour, sound and touch – materials reveal themselves to be changeable, dynamic and full of stories. Together with Anne Schneider, Jutta Stein and Moritz Appich, new connections and perspectives emerge. The open workshop programme invites anyone interested to get to the heart of modern materials. Our perception of materials is individual: they shape our environment and influence our experience – whether through the acoustics or lighting of a room or the feel of an object. The educational programme of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation focuses on experimental and inclusive formats. It opens up opportunities to go beyond familiar patterns of perception of the environment and design, to discover new perspectives and to take a fresh look at the design ideas behind the Bauhaus legacy.
