Out of the Display Case: To make the bowl shine

This edition of “Out the Display Case” focuses on a metal bowl by Marianne Brandt, which has been cleaned, conserved and restored by metal conservator Julia Lieffertz.

One of the many metal objects on display at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau that metal conservator Julia Lieffertz has worked on is the “Große flache Schale ME 160”. This was designed by Marianne Brandt in 1928 in the metal workshop of the Dessau Bauhaus.

In conversation with Torsten Blume of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Lieffertz explains how she treated this chrome-plated brass bowl to preserve its lustre. This highlights the particular care required for this and many other Bauhaus metal objects in order to preserve their historical value.
