Out of the Display Case: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – Is less always more?

This edition of “Out of the Display Case” focuses on a section of the large-scale glass façade that lends the Neue Nationalgalerie its sense of transparent lightness.

The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, built in 1968 by the former director of the Bauhaus, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is regarded as one of the major works of International Modernism. Following the building’s refurbishment (2012–2019), the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation donated various building components to the construcition research archive of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. These included a section of the large-format glass façade.

Peter Biewer, of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, will explain how the glass formats used in the building pushed the boundaries of what was possible at the time of its construction, and in doing so raises the question: is less really always more?

The object talk begins at 6 pm.

Prior to this, a guided tour of the exhibition Bakelite | Glaze | Colour will take place from 5 pm.
