Out of the Display Case: Walter Porstmann. Pioneer of standardisation and lowercase spelling

A key part of the Bauhaus identity was, among other things, the redesign of communication: lower case letters and the then novel DIN formats became the hallmark of the Dessau era.

Bernd Freese, who has been collecting Bauhaus objects for over four decades, has a very personal connection to the Bauhaus and its printed materials. Between 1958 and 1961, he completed his training as an industrial clerk in Berlin at Fabriknorm GmbH.

This company was founded by none other than Walter Porstmann – the pioneer who developed the DIN paper format. Porstmann himself was a frequent guest at the Bauhaus and gave passionate lectures promoting standardisation and standardised printed matter.

The intensive collaboration between Porstmann and the Bauhaus is documented today in numerous documents and correspondence. In order to preserve these testimonies to design history for posterity and make them accessible to the public, Bernd Freese has donated his extensive collection to the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. He talks about his motives in an interview with Torsten Blume, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

As part of the event, there will be a curator’s tour of the exhibition Bakelite | Glaze | Colour starting at 5 pm The lecture will then begin at 6 pm.
