Colour Co-Creation

Colour Co-Creation

The historic Bauhaus was closely linked to industrial production and thus contributed to the destructive consequences of modernism. At the same time, the avant-garde artists of the 1920s were already grappling with questions about the future of nature, the environment, climate and landscape.

In preparation for the exhibition “Bauhaus Ecologies”, 11.4. – 2.11.2025, at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, this workshop is dedicated to natural and synthetic colourants.

The “Bauhaus Ecologies” exhibition explores the question of how environmental issues were combined with design approaches between science, art and technology at the Bauhaus. In the workshop with Marcel Strauß, participants will experiment with different colour formulations and learn about their natural and synthetic components. The workshop provides answers to the questions How are the pigments for paints obtained? and Where can they be found in nature? How is synthetic pigment created? by examining ochre pigments of natural origin and synthetic colour tones. During the workshop, participants will also explore the “colour fastness” of commercial colours with the help of cyanobacteria (also known as spirulina). The vibrant colour spectrum of spirulina is altered by sunlight.

So how do authorship and reproduction shift when living matter reacts to its environment and thus participates in the creative process or expands it? Conversely, what does this collaboration mean for our perceptions of the environment and nature? Together we will get to the bottom of these questions in experiments.
