The exhibition Algae | Debris | CO2 at the former Zeeck department store showcases interdisciplinary approaches and practical examples that combine and promote aesthetic and sustainable design. As part of the workshop, Adam Hudec’s Biopatina Kit will be presented as a collective research tool designed to sharpen the perception, interpretation and evaluation of architectural exterior surfaces.
The Biopatina Workshop explores the thin, living layer of microorganisms—biopatina—that forms naturally on architectural surfaces. Rather than treating these stains, discolorations, and deposits as signs of decay, the workshop reframes them as indicators of ecological processes and multispecies coexistence.
Through guided observation, tactile engagement, and simple DIY tool “Biopatina Kit”, participants learn to recognize how algae, fungi, and bacteria inhabit façades and contribute to urban environmental health. The workshop responds to dominant architectural practices that prioritize cleanliness and visual uniformity, often erasing these living layers. By shifting attention toward biopatina, it proposes an alternative understanding of surfaces as dynamic interfaces between human and non-human worlds.
Participants are invited to engage directly with these often-overlooked phenomena, developing new sensory awareness and reconsidering maintenance, aesthetics, and care in the built environment.
