1925 – The Bauhaus comes to Dessau

In 1925, the Bauhaus moved from Weimar to Dessau. The monthly reading series looks back on that year 100 years later using everyday and unusual reports from historical newspapers and other sources. Aesthetic and political trends of the time will be analysed, and the Bauhaus will appear as a utopian community and a case of controversy.

The cycle starts in January at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau and returns to this central location again and again, alternating between other sites of history as reading locations. To accompany the reading series, the Museum of City History will be showing an exhibition of historical photographs. A publication on the reading series will be presented as part of the Triennale der Moderne in Dessau (26 – 28 September 2025).

After a welcoming address by the Director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Dr Barbara Steiner, Andreas Hillger and Frank Kreißler, Head of the City Archive, will read from historical sources.

Reading series in cooperation with the Dessau-Roßlau Cultural Office and City Archive.
