The collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation has received an enriching donation – the son of the sculptor Günter Morgner (1933-2013), Thomas Morgner, has given the collection a plaster model of a portrait sculpture by Hajo Rose (1910-1989).

According to the donor, this portrait was commissioned by Hajo Rose’s second wife.

Günter Morgner was a close friend of Hajo Rose. They presumably met in Leipzig around 1959/60, when Morgner began his studies in philosophy and aesthetics there, and lived in the same neighbourhood until Hajo Rose’s death in 1989. This presumably also resulted in Morgner’s enthusiasm for the Bauhaus, which is clearly reflected in his later works. The portrait sculpture is characterised by objectivity and naturalness. Seemingly lost in thought, the sitter has his gaze directed diagonally downwards and is not looking at the viewer. Morgner’s personal view of Hajo Rose may well have been captured in this depiction, as he had profound philosophical conversations with him and thus got to know the Bauhaus artist in a unique way.
