Last year, the architect Peter Mittmann from Weimar (*1939 in Breslau) died. This unfortunate occasion brought a treasure to the foundation’s library: the architect’s widow donated valuable books from his estate. Our librarian Kathrin Kolleck – assisted by our facility manager Jens Lütje – picked up the donation of a total of 165 publications in Weimar.
Peter Mittmann ran a construction office with Ernst Neufert and his son Peter. He was involved in a wide range of cultural activities and was awarded the Gold Badge of Honour by the city of Weimar in 1999 for his commitment. He also revitalised the Neufert House in Weimar and initiated the construction of the blue Neufert Box.
Ernst Neufert (1900-1986) was a close associate of Walter Gropius, from 1924 head of his architectural office and construction manager of the Masters’ Houses in Dessau. In 1936, Neufert developed Bauentwurfslehre, the most important standard work for architecture in Germany, which is still being updated today and aims to standardise the construction industry. Peter Mittmann himself was also involved in updating the Bauentwurfslehre. Several editions in different languages can be found in our library, also a personal donation from Peter Mittmann two years ago. The generous transfer of ownership thus creates a wonderful link between the Bauhaus Weimar and the Bauhaus Dessau and the library of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
