“meeting in public
like meeting on a pavement”
Since 2017, the five three-storey Houses with Balcony Access in Dessau-Törten have been part of the Bauhaus UNESCO World Heritage Site. They were built in 1929/30 as a collaborative project in the Bauhaus architecture department under the direction of Hannes Meyer. The small flats are organised on compact floor areas in such a way that a family of four could find all the necessities of life according to Meyer’s calculations of ‘people’s needs instead of luxury needs’. The special access to the houses via open arcades extends the living space outdoors and offers semi-public space for relaxation and communication.
On World Heritage Day 2025, a model flat in the Peterholzstr. 40 House with Balcony Access, which has been largely preserved in its original layout, and a carefully modernised 3-room flat in the Peterholzstr. 48 House with Balcony Accesscan be viewed. In the newly landscaped garden of the recently modernised house at Peterholzstr. 48, visitors are invited to enjoy coffee and cake and exchange information about the open spaces in the arcade houses as well as the history and life in the World Heritage Site.
