Freelance Bauhaus educator for inclusive-experimental formats

We are looking for freelance staff to introduce our visitors to the Bauhaus heritage in Dessau through group tours, workshops and exhibition activations. Many thousands of guests visit the Bauhaus sites every year and want to get to know the Bauhaus, its history and current tasks. Specialist groups, educational and cultural tourists and schoolchildren are the main target groups.

Some of the freelance educators will also have the possibility to work on the conception of the educational formats if they are interested and fulfil the relevant requirements. This process is expected to start in January 2025 in tandems and working group meetings, focussing on at least two of the features listed below for each format, as well as specifically on connections or intersections between them. The working group will be supported by members of the Curatorial Workshop in terms of organisation and content. The concept will be remunerated on a flat-rate basis.

We are looking for people who are interested in contributing their professional and personal skills to make exhibition content at the historic Bauhaus Buildings and the Bauhaus Museum Dessau accessible. Context-specific programmes are developed based on the research and concepts of the exhibition teams at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. The exhibitions are activated for specific target groups through the methodological focal points of the educators.

Educational formats with the following characteristics are to be created
(list does not indicate a ranking):

  • Exclusive offers for PoC and LGBTQI+
  • “Sensory friendly“ formats
  • Formats in plain language
  • Formats for blind and visually impaired people, with audio description
  • Formats in German, English and sign language, as well as Arabic, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese or other languages

(Please refer to this in 2–3 sentences in your statement of motivation: What specific experience do you have in developing educational formats with the aforementioned characteristics? What could a potential format look like?)

We would particularly like to encourage disabled people, LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer and intersex people), PoC (people of colour) and people without a (German) university degree to get in touch with us!

The workload varies from season to season (main season: April–October) and includes weekends. Experience has shown that most requests for educational formats are made on Thursdays and at weekends. Freelancers are free to organise their work as they wish and are not obliged to work a minimum number of hours per month. A basic knowledge of German at level B2 is an advantage for communication within the foundation.

Remuneration is on a fee basis.
Preparation and follow-up time for workshops is remunerated.

Are you enthusiastic about the Bauhaus? Do you have the desire or experience to carry out or co-develop inclusive-experimental educational formats? Are you communicative, curious, articulate and have a confident manner, even in front of a group? Do you know how to tell history and stories vividly / deal creatively and context-sensitively with barriers in your work / mediate artistically and interactively? Are you experienced in dealing with groups? Are you not distracted by questions or incidents in a group? Then we would be delighted if you are interested in working in the education team of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation!

Send your documents (covering letter, CV, if applicable, portfolio or other proof of experience) by 10 January 2025 to: vermittlung@bauhaus-dessau.de
