Out of the Display Case: Tubular steel composition for plants in the room

This edition of the event series “Out of the Display Case” is dedicated to the design and production process of a flower and cactus stand by Emile Guyot (Guillot).

Alongside Marcel Breuer, Emile Guyot (1892 -1960) was one of the most important designers at the Thonet furniture factories for almost 30 years from around 1927. Among other things, he designed the multi-tiered table made of tubular steel and glass for Thonet around 1930.

In his designs, he primarily investigated the relationship between furniture and the human body. Anatomical and functional aspects went hand in hand in his design.

Tubular steel furniture that appears weightless, such as the B 136 cactus stand, is regarded as an expression of liberated living. Andreas Butter, research associate at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s collection, will lead us through this evening and, in addition to the design history of the tubular steel furniture, will also focus on its extremely complex and energy-intensive production process.
