café-bistro at the Bauhaus

The Café-Bistro carries on in the tradition of the Bauhaus Club, the original idea of which dates from 1986 at the Bauhaus Dessau Centre for Design. It was intended as a meeting place for people taking part in the programmes, as well as for employees and friends. The first planning ideas were outlined in a 1987 joint diploma thesis by two students from Halle and Weimar. Their vision was “a kiosk at the centre, with benches like quays with red beacons – a harbour for the evenings … the “keepers of objectivity” complained about it – a breach of style in the temple of modernity. The minister in charge refused the promised funds: ‘they are supposed to be working at the Bauhaus, not drinking’. and yet: construction began in 1988. Such are the recollections of Martin Stein, who worked at the Bauhaus at the time.

The club did not open in the basement until the summer of 1990 – with different furniture and decor to those originally planned. Since then, its appearance has changed many times. What has stayed the same is that the Bauhaus Club is still a place where people meet to talk, eat, drink, hold discussions, and celebrate.

On 1 January 1991, the Bauhaus Club became a private company. It is still run by Stefan Serfling, who has been there from the very beginning.

Canteen at the Bauhaus

In the 1920s, the Bauhaus teachers and students used to meet up for lunch in the Bauhaus canteen.

Today, the canteen is open to everyone. Visitors can have lunch in the original surroundings, sitting on the famous B9 tubular steel stools designed by Marcel Breuer in 1926, surrounded by a faithful reproduction of the original colour design by Hinnerk Scheper, and under two of the original lamps by Max Krajewski (the third lamp is a replica). The menu, however, has changed since then: there is a wide variety of dishes on offer, with a number of vegetarian options as well as traditional meat dishes. The classic Bauhaus dish of bread with buttermilk – introduced as a low-cost meal for students in those days – is still on the menu.

Kiosk at the Masters’ Houses

The Kiosk at the Masters’ Houses has been in operation again since 1 June 2023. Built by Mies van der Rohe in 1932, the Kiosk survived the war largely unscathed, but was demolished in 1962 for unknown reasons and replaced by a fence. With the urban planning repair of the Masters’ Houses estate by the Berlin office BFM, which was completed in 2014, the Kiosk also returned to the intersection, interpreted in a contemporary way and reduced to its pure form.

In 2016, the Kiosk resumed its function and has now reopened after a long period of closure due to the pandemic. In keeping with the historical tradition, cold drinks and hot coffee specialities, as well as small snacks for in between, are once again available.

The garden of Haus Gropius at the back of the Kiosk offers shady spots and invites you to linger.

LOKAL/LOKAL Café at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau

A new coffee bar opened in the new Bauhaus Museum in 2019. It offers young, sustainable cuisine as well as simple, delicious home cooking. Soups, sandwiches, and quiches are available plus the changing dishes of the day. Our La Marzocco Italian coffee machine makes excellent coffee to go with our homemade cakes, which in summer can be enjoyed on the outdoor terrace facing the city park.

The name LOKAL/LOKAL refers to our two aspirations – in German, the word “Lokal“ means both “a place to eat” and “local”. All items on our menu are prepared using regional products wherever possible. LOKAL/LOKAL works with suppliers such as the Urban Farm in Dessau. Our series “ProbierMAHL Dessau” regularly introduces new, interesting ingredients and flavours, such as fermented foods, wild herb cocktails, or algae pasta from the Algomed microalgae farm in Klötze served on edible tableware.
