To the Core – Materials of Modernity

Special themed tour of the centennial exhibitions Glass | Concrete | Metal at the Bauhaus Building in Dessau

What actually defines modernity – forms, ideas or materials? This special tour deliberately focuses on the material basis of Bauhaus modernity and invites visitors to rediscover glass, concrete and metal as central players in architecture, design and social change.

Based on the ideas of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, the tour focuses on those materials that embodied the promise of a new era: transparency, openness, industrial production and technical innovation. Visitors will encounter not only famous designs and design classics, but above all the substances themselves – their raw materials, manufacturing processes, design possibilities and their impact on the environment, work and everyday life.

The exhibitions show how metals were extracted from ore and became load-bearing elements of modern constructions and iconic furniture, how concrete enabled new architectural freedoms and opened up seemingly limitless spaces, and how glass, as a material of light, created a new relationship between interior and exterior space. Material studies from Bauhaus teaching, experimental objects, photographs from industry and research, and architectural models illustrate how closely art, technology and science were linked.

At the same time, the tour takes a critical look at the conditions of modernity: industrial production chains, working realities on construction sites and in factories, and the ecological footprint of raw material extraction. This creates a broader understanding of the Bauhaus – not just as a style or myth, but as an exploration of materials, technology and social responsibility.

The special tour provides a coherent insight into the three centennial exhibitions and offers guidance for subsequent individual exploration.

The guided walk around the Dessau-Törten Housing Estate begins at the Konsum Building (Am Dreieck 1, 06849 Dessau-Roßlau), where visitors can visit an exhibition about the history of the housing estate, before viewing various types of the historic buildings such as the model house SieTö and the Houses with Balcony Access. Due to reconstruction work, the steel building can currently only be seen from the outside.

Note:
The Dessau-Törten Housing Estate is five kilometres away from the Bauhaus Building. Please organise your own transport.

Couple relationships in the Bauhaus Masters’ Houses: the wives of the Masters in the modernist artists’ colony

The Masters’ Houses are an expression of the new modernist lifestyle translated into architectural form. The idea behind the new interior design was, among other things, to bring benefits to the women living there. But how did the masters’ wives, Nina Kandinsky and Lilly Klee, actually experience life in the new semi-detached house? How did they manage to actually implement the newly propagated egalitarian lifestyle vis-à-vis their husbands? In everyday life, traditional role models often clashed with the burgeoning emancipation of women at the Bauhaus.

Unexpected discoveries at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau – students and teachers at the Bauhaus School

Many students came to the school as a result of the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in 1923 and were fascinated by the unusual and interesting works. The innovative concept of Walter Gropius and his masters, some of whom were already internationally renowned, promised a new era for men and women alike, offering them the opportunity to develop their creative talents and promote and expand their artistic and craftsmanship skills. At the beginning, the proportion of women at the Bauhaus was greater than that of their male fellow students. However, this changed drastically as a result of social constraints and the hierarchical self-image of the male-dominated Bauhaus management. But the women who were not deterred, such as Lena Meyer-Bergner and Marianne Brandt, left an indelible mark on the Bauhaus.

This guided tour brings together the permanent exhibition “Versuchsstätte Bauhaus: The Collection” and the centennial exhibition “Bakelite | Glaze | Colour.” Participants will discover how the Bauhaus had an impact beyond national borders: people, ideas, and artworks traveled from Europe to the United States, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The tour shows how teachers and students from many different countries worked together, inspired one another, and thus formed a global network of art, architecture, and design.

Using selected objects from the centennial exhibition and the collection, participants will learn how the Bauhaus spread ideas, knowledge, and materials around the world. These include colour palettes, furniture, photographs, and everyday objects that illustrate how Bauhaus ideas developed across continents and generations. Personal stories of the people who created or used these objects are also at the heart of the tour, bringing the transnational dimension of the Bauhaus to life.
