During the Bauhaus tours, participants can get to know the Bauhaus and follow in the footsteps of the Bauhaus members: How did they live, learn, work and teach? What was invented at the Bauhaus and what rules did they follow when designing? What is special about Bauhaus architecture and what can we still find in our everyday lives today?

All Bauhaus tours combine explanations of the building and the historic Bauhaus with active exploration and observation. For example, building-specific features are discovered, architectural models and historical Bauhaus material samples are examined and design forms are actively explored. In this way, the participants acquire some of the knowledge themselves and pass it on to the other participants. Participants are also given access to special rooms that are not open to the public.

Bauhaus tour at the Bauhaus Building

The Bauhaus Building is the historic school building of the “Hochschule für Gestaltung”: it was built in 1925/26 according to plans by Walter Gropius and opened on 4 December 1926. It was here that students learnt from the Bauhaus masters and other teachers what good design was all about. During the Bauhaus tour, participants become Bauhaus detectives/Bauhaus researchers or Bauhaus experts, depending on their age: after a general introduction with basic information about the Bauhaus, they explore various stations in the famous Bauhaus building in teams, accompanied by experts. Explanations about the building and the historical Bauhaus alternate with activity-orientated research tasks. The children and young people are given activity sheets that encourage them to try things out, think and puzzle.

Bauhaus tour at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau

The Bauhaus Museum Dessau was opened just in time for the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019 and has been home to the treasures of the Dessau Bauhaus collection ever since. They are on display in the exhibition “Versuchsstätte Bauhaus. The Collection” in the Black Box, on the upper floor of the museum. As part of this Bauhaus tour, participants will work with key objects from the collection presentation. Individual objects are analysed in groups with the help of activity cards from the pupils’ perspective. Together, they design a tour that invites them to exchange ideas and actively engage with the themes of the collection presentation.

In the 60-minute workshops, participants can try out artistic techniques and methods in a playful way and get to know the Bauhaus in a very practical way. The design pedagogical practice of the historic Bauhaus serves as a model, which is translated into today’s world of children and young people.

How do we want to sit? – Design workshop

The workshop “How do we want to sit?” looks at how ideas can be found for the design process and introduces and tests four selected methods that can help with finding ideas. Participants will gain an insight into the design work of designers and develop their own ideas for seating furniture. Sketches, small spontaneous models and many new ideas are created.

Simply without a camera – Photography workshop

The “Simply without a camera” workshop introduces the photogram as a photography technique. With the help of solar paper, the students explore the basics of analogue photography and experiment with various materials as a design element. Each participant creates and exposes his/her own photogram and can observe the development of the image directly. Original works by Bauhaus master László Moholy-Nagy, who also taught the technique of photograms in his Bauhaus classes, can be viewed in the exhibition “Versuchsstätte Bauhaus. The Collection” exhibition and discussed together.

BOOKable – Advertising workshop

The Bauhaus typeface stands for reduction and geometry. Bauhaus typography has been around since 1923. The Bauhaus master László Moholy-Nagy was a style-defining influence. Alongside him, Bauhaus teachers Herbert Bayer and Joost Schmidt created new design principles in the teaching of the advertising workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau. In the BOOKable workshop, participants will gain an insight into the nuts and bolts of the Bauhaus. In practical work, we will explore the question of how a sheet of paper becomes a book.

On a tour, participants discover the Bauhaus Building, the Masters’ Houses or the Bauhaus Museum Dessau. Depending on the location of the tour, historical rooms that are not normally accessible can also be discovered. These include the assembly hall and the former director’s room. The tour provides an overview of the architectural principles and historical background of the Bauhaus.
