The V29 project combines socially oriented housing with an experimental, research-based approach to construction.
During the workshop, a portable bandsaw mill will be used to cut small-diameter logs. These will be used to create a prototype of central components for a sustainably built house.
The research workshop, held as part of the exhibition Algae | Debris | CO2, focuses on the use of “deciduous softwood logs” in construction. During the workshop, we will work together on eight oak logs. We will explore how these logs, despite their crookedness and industrial “non-conformity”, can be utilised as resources for urban housing construction. To this end, the trunks will be edged on four sides on-site using a mobile band saw. Together, we aim to investigate which cross-sections can be cut from the variously curved trunk profiles. We will systematically document the results and supplement them with moisture measurements and drawn profile dimensions.
The workshop is aimed at anyone interested in practical work who would also like to learn more about the use of softwood from deciduous trees against the backdrop of forest restructuring driven by climate change. No prior knowledge is required – all safety-related tasks will be carried out by qualified professionals. Nevertheless, hands-on participation is very welcome, and sturdy workwear is therefore recommended.
