What lies behind nature? Where do we go when everything around us fades away? When we ourselves must pass away? It is not by chance that our thoughts wander far in the time of the ending year: over the landscape, the horizon, to the stars … Around Franz Schubert's penultimate song composition with clarinet – Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (Sheperd on the Rock) – a cosmos of different works unfolds: From Heinz Holliger's Reliques on texts by Schubert in the same instrumentation, to Salvatore Sciarrino's Melencolia I, which meditates on Dürer's master engraving of the same name from the Anhalt Picture Gallery, to Morgenstern's Galgenlieder (Gallows Songs), composed by the Belgian composer Jacqueline Fontyn.
