23 Feb – 1 March 2020
Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO), Moscow (Russia)
Elizaveta Zemlyanova, artist, Dean of the Faculties of Design and Photography of IGUMO, Curator of Days of Contemporary Art (DOCA) international festival.
The project is a collaboration between students of the Faculty of Design of IGUMO and of the Architecture College of MKIK. The basis of the project is studying public spaces and social housing as an important part of human habitat. The goal of the study is to identify the formula used to construct social housing in Russia and Germany today. The Open Studio is composed of twelve mini-studies of public spaces of different sizes, from a living room to parks and squares. In their work, students applied speculative design methods and presented the results as art objects. Speaking about architecture in the language of contemporary art, we drew attention to emotional component of public spaces and to the feelings people have about them. The project could thus be described as an attempt to conduct sensory urban studies, exploring the intersections of architecture, art, and pedagogy.
