Triennial of Modernism 2022:
Housing. Working. Living

// Exhibitions + Events + Guided Tours + Music
7 – 9 Oct 2022
Urban area of Dessau-Roßlau

The Dessau Triennial weekend 2022 will be devoted entirely to the topic “water culture”. In the 1920s and 1930s, the use of technology to supply households with water for domestic uses, especially outside the major cities, had only just begun. Only a few houses were connected to a sewer system or drinking water supply. But with the progressive installation of sanitary facilities in buildings, the habits associated with personal care, laundry, or household maintenance changed, as did water consumption. Examples of this shift include places and modernist buildings in Dessau from the Bauhaus Building to the Pump Station in the Dessau-Törten Housing Estate, as well as the water works in the east of the city as a testament to water cycle management and the Hugo Junkers museum of technology, named after the great pioneer of water heating. They represent upward mobility and social progress in the field of water culture.

The various venues of the Triennial of Modernism are connected by music. Whether it’s jazz in a historical building, music in gardens or even on the road in a historical double-decker bus: the water culture of the city and the Bauhaus is brought to life through music.

The Triennial of Modernism is a collaborative project of the cities of Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin.
