Gildenhall – Utopie und Wirklichkeit

Germany 2021, 39 minutes, Direction: Katrein Wolf

Inflation, unemployment, housing shortages, the displacement of crafts by industry: the years after the First World War were full of challenges. The legacy of this time, however, is not the problems people faced, but the astonishing solutions they found for them. Gildenhall reflects the spirit of optimism of an entire generation. Hardly any other settlement crystallises the currents of the twenties in such a diverse way. The settlers combined ideas from the garden city and cooperative movements, the land reform and the life reform with those of the Deutscher Werkbund and the Bauhaus. The goals of the settlement, for which renowned architects such as Otto Bartning and Adolf Meyer designed, were the abolition of the land monopoly, settling and working according to communal economic principles, the recovery of crafts and the production of modern arts and crafts.

The film was produced with funds from the "Neustart Kultur" programme on behalf of Horizonte e.V.
