Instrument (2021), the work Rita Evans has developed for the Gropius House, enables the relationship between an individual's body to the space of other bodies. This creates a collective of people that includes the sculpture and its materials. The sculptures mediate touching and being touched at different proximities. The collective space formed by the group around the object, includes the object as an agent, as well as a mediator of touch and movement. In preceding workshops, the group experiments with body and material so that previously unknown points of relationship emerge. These are charged with current social spaces of the pandemic – in close proximity, layered, entwined and woven together, but at a distance, creating a sensual infrastructure.
Rita Evans' work will be exhibited along with a documentation of the workshops that took place. Visitors will hear how the objects being played and see drawings, plans, spatial scores and other objects that emerged from these encounters. In addition, visitors can experience the space of Gropius House itself as a piece of sensual infrastructure.
The works of Rita Evans can be seen at Gropius House until 26 June 2022.
